Water is a precious resource in Rio Rancho, and the city has implemented several measures to ensure its sustainable use. One key initiative is the annual watering restrictions, in effect from April 1 through October 31. During this period, spray irrigation is prohibited between 11:00 AM and 7:00 PM to minimize evaporation losses. Exceptions include drip irrigation, hand watering, and watering of containerized plants. Residents are encouraged to report instances of water waste to the Water Conservation Office.
In addition to conservation efforts, Rio Rancho has pioneered innovative projects to enhance its water resources. Notably, the city became the first in New Mexico to implement an aquifer injection project. Operational since 2017, this initiative allows the city to inject purified water back into the aquifer, replenishing groundwater supplies and ensuring a reliable drinking water source for future generations.
To further support water conservation, the city offers outdoor rebates to residents who upgrade to high-efficiency rotating sprinkler nozzles or smart irrigation controllers. These rebates aim to encourage the adoption of water-efficient technologies in residential landscapes.
Through a combination of conservation measures and innovative projects, Rio Rancho is actively working to secure a sustainable water future for its community.
